Athens and Greece in 2004
In August 2004 all eyes will be on Athens, Greece when the XXVIII Summer Olympic Games will take place between 13 August - 29 August. For two weeks will the number one sport event take place in the shadow of Acropolis and the surrounding hills and mountains. Athens and Greece are well prepared to host the games!

Paralympic Games
From 17 – 28 september 2004 will the Paralympic Games take place at 19 venues. Around 135 countries with approx, 4.200 athletes will participate in 19 sports. It is expected to be the biggest games ever, with more nations participating than in Sydney.

Some of the main projects are:
• The Athens International Airport
Opened on March 28, 2001. The airport, named Eleftherios Venizelos is today one of the most modern airports in the world. The airport serves 16 million passengers every year

• The Athens Metro
The Athens Metro opened to the public in January 2000. A connection with the new international airport will also be created.

• The Egnatia Motorway
687 km motorway across northern Greece. The largest roadwork under construction in Europe and part of the Trans-European Road Network.

• The Rio-Antirio Bridge
At the Corinth Gulf. The longest cable bridge in the world.

Security
The government plans to spend more than 550 million EURO on security matters such as surveillance, patrols and other measures. Security is a top issue for Athens organizers as Greece poses an additional challenge because of its porous land and sea borders.
