Athens Festival
The Festival, which have achieved world renown over the years are staged from June through September, includes a vast range of culture events, including music, opera, orchestra performances, ballet, modern dance and theatre. The main objective of these events is to receive the public's interest in the heritage of the past, and at the same time to promote modern Greek achievements and contemporary international trend in the world of arts. The events take place in the Odeion of Herodius Atticus, a particular beautiful marble theatre dating back to Roman times, build in A.D. 161 by Herodius Atticus, as a memorial to his wife Regilla.

It all started on the 24th of August 1955 when the Athens Festival was inaugurated at the Odeon of Herod Atticus. The Festival has expended over the years and thousands of Greeks and foreign art-lovers come here every year.

Epidaurus Festival
Since 1954, the Epidaurus Festival has re-created ancient Greek classics at the beautiful and acoustically tremendous theatre at Epidaurus. This is a marvellous opportunity to experience tradition of ancient Greek drama. The performances are in Greek but programs provide synopses in other languages.

The festival is held from July to September, weekends only.

Carnivals
There is a big carnival going on in Athens the last weekend before the fast. The streets of Pláka are more crowded than usual and colourful masks and joke articles are sold everywhere. Families and friends are gathered together to eat in the restaurants.
