Open Air Theatres
When
you are in Athens, make sure to visit any of the
Open Air Theatres, an unique experience you will
never forget. The most famous of the outdoor theatred
is the Theater of Irodion (Herod Atticus) at the
foot of the Acropolis. Concerts, philharmonic performances,
ballet and dance and operas are performed from the
end of May until the end of September.
Another outdoor stage in magnificent surroundings
is the Theater of Epidavrus where they stages
ancient productions from the likes of Aristophanes,
Euripides, and Sophocles and others.
Theatre
The western theatre dates from the antique culture
of Dionysus. Athens was the centre of drama competitions
during the Dionysus Festival that was celebrated
in the spring. Tragedies, satires and comedies
were played. It was characteristically performed
on a flat, circular space containing the altar,
called the orchestra, where the chorus sang and
danced and the actors spoke.
In today’s Athens you will find the National Theatre
of Greece, which is famous for its production
of antique drama and opera.

The National Theatre became the Royal Theatre
in 1901, but as early as 1908 it was closed down
again. In 1930 it was re-established by George
Papandreou, then Minister of Education, as The
National Theatre, functioning for several years
as a legal entity under public law. In 1994 the
theatre came under private law, a non-profit making
organisation, whose aim was to broaden the cultural
horizons of the Greek people.
The National Theatre of Greece includes five theatres
al located in Athens.

Museum
The Theatre Museum was founded in 1938 by the
historian of the Greek Theatre, Yiannis Sideris.
Explore the history of the theatrical life, stage
costumes and props, photographs, models of stage
settings, personal belongings of leading figures
of the theatre. In the library you will find a
volume of 25 000 books about theatre from Greek
and foreign bibliography.
He was succeeded in 1976 by the atrical writer
Manolis Kores. In the Museum's rooms are exhibited
memorabilia of theatrical life, stage costumes
and props, photographs, models of stage settings,
personal belongings of leading figures of the
theatre, as well as posters and programmes. The
library includes about 25,000 volumes on the theatre,
from Greek and foreign bibliography. The theatrical
archives include 18th-century manuscripts, programmes
and posters of theatre companies from the 19th
century on.
